1965 Ford Mustang 1st Gen (1965-1966)

On 17 April 1964, Ford unveiled the Mustang at the New York World's Fair and created a genre. Long bonnet, short boot, four seats, an accessible price: 22, 000 orders on the first day, over 400, 000 cars in the first year. The very first examples, assembled between March and August 1964 before production lines shut down for the 1965 model year changeover, form a series that collectors today identify as the "1964½".

Our example is part of this, and its factory plate, original and still riveted to the door pillar, tells the story line by line.

- 76A: convertible bodywork with standard trim.

- V: Sunlight Yellow, a pale yellow offered exclusively on 1964½ models and applied to barely 3. 4% of production, before disappearing from the catalogue from autumn 1964 onwards.

- 86: black vinyl trim.

- 09G: left the assembly line on 9 July 1964, five weeks before the switch to the current 1965 model year.

- 43: delivered new by the Rockford commercial district in Illinois.

- 1: standard 3. 00 rear axle.

- 6: three-speed C4 automatic gearbox.

Resprayed, this example is presented today in red. The bodywork alignment is good and the hood operates perfectly. Its interior and Pony trim are in very good condition. The handling is sound and driving pleasant, aided by front disc braking.

The history is documented. Having left Illinois, the car made its way to California, as evidenced by a tyre invoice issued in 2000 in Chula Vista, near San Diego, at 18, 089 miles. Imported and registered in France on 13 August 2009, it is now with its second French owner, on a French classic vehicle registration document.

The odometer reads 24, 544 miles, approximately 39, 500 km. A full service was carried out in March 2026: engine oil and filter change, gearbox, rear axle and cooling system fluid changes, replacement of rear wheel cylinders with brake system fluid change and bleed, complete lubrication, ignition and carburettor check and adjustment, new spark plugs, four new tyres.
