Among the myriad factory options Ford offered on its wildly popular 1965 Mustang is the High-Performance V8 package known as the "K-Code." Officially rated at 271 horsepower, the K-Code 289 was the most powerful Mustang you could get this side of a Shelby GT350, thanks to the addition of a revised camshaft, solid lifters, higher compression ratio, a special intake manifold and four-barrel carburetor. Ticking the K-Code box required selection of the Special Handling Package, adding heavy-duty suspension and a quicker steering ratio. Over the 1965 Mustang's 18-month run, just 7,273 customers opted for the K-Code-representing just one percent of the total 1965 Mustang production. While no official breakdown is available, 1965 K-Code convertible production is generally believed to not exceed a few hundred cars.

Ford officially began building Mustangs in April of 1964, four months ahead of the rest of the range. Officially, all first-year Mustangs hail from the 1965 model year, but the earliest cars, known as "1964½" have several distinguishing features and detail differences compared to their full production counterparts. The shift to the full-1965 production was not instantaneous, resulting in a handful of so-called transition cars with attributes of both.

This 1965 Mustang Convertible is one of these rare transition cars. Decoding the door tag reveals it was built in Dearborn on 3 September 1964, placing it squarely within the transition period. It came equipped with the high-performance K-Code engine, Toploader four-speed manual transmission, a 3.89:1 rear axle, and was finished as presented here in Wimbledon White (code M) over Blue vinyl upholstery (code 22) and a white vinyl top. Additional features include dealer-installed air conditioning, Rally-Pac gauges, AM/8-Track stereo, and a luggage rack.

Discovered in the Ozarks and restored by an enthusiast in the late 1980s, it is a well-documented car retaining its original matching-numbers engine and transmission-only the K-Code had VIN-matched drivetrain components at the time. During the restoration, the car was identified as a transition model, and great care was taken to preserve its factory-correct features including the alternator, date-coded Autolite carburetor with a manual choke, improved six-bolt bellhousing, and hand-welded structural cross brace beneath the seats.

That owner retained the car until his passing, after which it joined Mr. Greg Rusk's Generous Collection, from which the vendor acquired it in 2025. In the current owner's care, it has been treated to extensive mechanical and electrical restoration work and concours detailing – focused on preservation of its original components. Reflecting that attention to detail, this Mustang was displayed in the Pony Car class at the 2026 Amelia Concours and has been invited to appear in the 2026 Concours at Wynn Las Vegas.

Featuring a wealth of desirable factory equipment and fascinating early-production characteristics, this incredibly rare Mustang K-Code convertible represents a significant moment in Mustang history and should not be overlooked by serious collectors.
