History of the Triumph GT6 When Triumph Motor Company unveiled the GT6 at the London Motor Show in 1966, the idea was as clear as it was effective: to pair the elegant coupe bodywork designed by Giovanni Michelotti with a compact six-cylinder in-line engine. Michelotti’s signature — long bonnet, smooth roofline and a harmoniously proportioned fastback rear — gave the GT6 a presence well beyond its class. Its silhouette inevitably evoked far more expensive Gran Turismo models of its era. With a touch of irony, the GT6 earned the nickname “Poor Man’s E-Type.” A comparison that highlighted the aesthetic proximity — without fully doing justice to the GT6’s independent character. The GT6 Mk1 is now regarded as the purest and most formally accomplished version of the series. The sobriety of its lines and its mechanical honesty make it an ideal base for a credible contemporary interpretation. Vehicle presentation Here we have a 1969 Triumph GT6 Mk1, currently undergoing complete structural reconstruction within our workshop. The aim is not a restoration to its original state, but a precise and technically sound reinterpretation of a British six-cylinder coupé — as Triumph Motor Company might have produced it in the late 1960s with a broadened development budget. The technical configuration is fully defined. The customisation deliberately focuses on the aesthetic execution. Technical concept At the heart of the project lies a 2. 5-litre straight-six Triumph engine, fully rebuilt and of British origin. The specification includes: • Optimised flow cylinder head • Larger-diameter valves • Specially calibrated “Fast Road Torque” camshaft • Carefully balanced moving assembly • Compression ratio tailored for road-oriented performance Power target: around 170 bhp, with a particular emphasis on generous mid-range torque. Induction • Three Weber 40 DCOE twin-barrel carburettors • Open aluminium intake stacks with fine stainless-steel mesh • Optional sport air filter • Mechanical throttle linkage in keeping with the period spirit Exhaust system • Separate-tube exhaust manifold • Handmade exhaust system with a central dual outlet • The acoustic character remains metallic, present and authentic. Transmission • 5-speed gearbox with short-throw gearing • Adapted prop shaft • Sports-tpecified clutch • Integration into the interior without visible stylistic breaks. Rear axle • 3. 63:1 differential ratio • Limited-slip differential for improved traction • Conversion to constant-velocity joint drive shafts to increase reliability • These measures serve not only to increase performance but, above all, to ensure durable mechanical endurance. Chassis / Suspension • Redefined suspension geometry • Optimised damper and spring rates • Moderate lowering • Reinforced bearings and steering components Braking system • High-performance disc brakes at the front and rear • Four-piston front calipers • Dual-circuit braking system with adjustable brake bias Electrical system • The original electrical system, known for its fragility, is completely renewed. All harnesses, connectors and earth points are modernised while preserving the classic appearance of the engine bay. • The objective is to ensure contemporary reliability without altering the historical look. Wheels • 16-inch light alloy wheels • High-performance tyres 215/ 45 • The wheel/ tyre configuration is an integral part of the overall dynamic concept and has been defined in line with the new suspension geometry. Customisation If the technical specification is fixed definitively, the future owner may adjust the following elements: • Body colour • Leather quality and colour scheme • Seat design and layout • Choice of upholstery fabrics and interior materials • Ergonomic adaptation of driving position (seat, steering wheel, pedal box) to the future owner’s morphology • The completion of the vehicle is planned about 9 months after final order confirmation. The reconstruction will be documented comprehensively in a personalised restoration book. Summary This Triumph GT6 Restomod represents a technically grounded and coherent evolution of a British classic — with a clearly defined performance objective, modern precision and assumed mechanical integrity. The label “Poor Man’s E-Type” unquestionably belongs to the history of this model. In the configuration presented here, it is less a...
