A charming MK1 MGB Roadster – “Pull Handle” Model – with a secret!

Historical Background - Heritage in England has confirmed that our older restoration MK1 model was manufactured on 1 December 1966, with its first registration in the USA taking place on 1 July 1967. This example first appeared in Germany in 1992, where it has remained until the present day, carrying the chassis number G-HN3-L/ 108965. The extensive historical file contains a large number of invoices and receipts belonging to the first German owner, Mr. Jörg Kolwe, who clearly had great plans for the car but, somehow, was never able to realise his dreams. His fascinating photographs and handwritten notes are a delight for any classic-car enthusiast to read. He sold the car in 1993 to a man who ultimately changed the future of this little gem in a wonderful way, resulting in the car you see today. The new owner, Dipl.-Ing. Mr. Ferlesch, then sold the car after ten years to a good friend, who conscientiously continued its care and maintenance.

During the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the MGB in 2012, the car was featured in not one, but two German classic-car magazines: British Classics, April 2012, and Oldtimer Markt, October 2012.

Exterior - Finished in the popular MGB Tartan Red, the body and paintwork was completed restored in April 2004 and is clearly now classed as an older restoration, however, it is still probably one of the best examples of its age that we have ever seen. The new chrome bumpers and other chrome components, at the time, remain in remarkably good condition today. An aluminium bonnet was fitted in 2012 with the original also available.

Until 1969, the standard MGB wheel was essentially a simple four-stud steel wheel with 12 oval ventilation holes, as fitted to our example.(Source: Anders Ditlev Clausager, “Original MGB”)

Engine & Gearbox - The car’s engine, numbered 18G-U-H-1144, has been dated by Heritage in England to 1962–early 1963. In 2003, the engine underwent a comprehensive rebuild, including the fitting of new pistons and crankshaft components.

The most significant enhancement, however, is the five-speed Ford gearbox conversion. Supplied by Hi-Gear Engineering Ltd. of Derby, England, this well-engineered conversion transforms the driving experience, providing noticeably stronger torque and improved flexibility while retaining all the character and enjoyment that make the MGB so appealing.

For those initially sceptical of such a modification, the results are particularly impressive. The conversion is best appreciated from behind the wheel, where its benefits become immediately apparent. The car is also offered with its original gearbox, allowing the new owner the option of returning the car to its original specification if desired.
