Some cars impress with speed. Others with sheer size. And then there are cars that make people smile spontaneously the moment they hear them coming. This DKW F91 Cabriolet very clearly belongs in that last category.
That is, of course, thanks to its delightful three-cylinder two-stroke engine. You hear it before you can quite see what is approaching. Light, eager, and completely different from almost anything on the road today. Even the biggest critic of classic cars cannot help but smile a little. And then it turns out that the story behind this DKW is every bit as charming.
The car spent no fewer than 49 years of its life in Berlin. The original Kraftfahrzeugbrief is still tangible proof of that. It means this F91 was quite literally part of a city that changed enormously during that period. When the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, this car had already been at home there for years. Suddenly, a small detail like that becomes something very special.
The F91 appeared in 1953 as the DKW Sonderklasse and was fitted with an 897 cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine producing around 34 horsepower. Not much by modern standards, but that is not really the point of this car at all. The F91 was light, front-wheel drive, and technically surprisingly advanced for its time. Its steering, freewheel system, and column-mounted shifter also give it exactly that characteristic DKW personality enthusiasts love so much. And the Cabriolet was, of course, the most charming version of all.
Only relatively small numbers of F91 Cabriolets were built by Karmann, which is why you do not often come across them today. Open-top driving, that unmistakable two-stroke soundtrack, and bodywork that instantly says 1950s: honestly, it does not need to get much more fun than that.
This example was fully restored body-off between 2002 and 2006 by its last owner. And that is exactly where you can see his enthusiasm. Not just in the broad strokes, but especially in the details. The car presents in exceptionally well-cared-for condition, the black leather interior looks beautiful, and everything comes together as a very convincing whole.
The documentation is somewhat more modest. But frankly, that also fits this kind of history. Old-school owners were often less concerned with folders full of invoices and certificates. They drove their cars and enjoyed them. Fortunately, this DKW still tells plenty of its own story. Start the engine and you understand immediately.
That characteristic two-stroke sound attracts attention at once. People turn around, look again, and smile. Not because this DKW is the fastest car on the street, but because it has character. And perhaps, in the end, that is far more enjoyable.
A neat, lovingly restored F91 Cabriolet with nearly half a century of Berlin history and a sound you will not soon forget. That is simply wonderful, is it not? Discover this DKW at Gallery Aaldering and contact us today. We export our vehicles worldwide; please ask us about the possibilities.
