History

The Triumph TR4 is a popular roadster that is lightweight, agile, and a joy to drive, combined with stunning Italian design. The design was created by Michelotti, known for work with Ferrari and Maserati. Built in 1966 and originally delivered in the United States, where the climate is favorable. The last American owner kept the car in Monterey, California. In 1994, it was imported to the Netherlands and has been owned by the same owner since. The car comes with extensive documentation, including export papers, an original owners handbook, and the most recent MOT from 2021 (after which MOT was no longer required due to the car’s age). Additionally, there is a collection of books, including a parts catalog and workshop manual.

Exterior

A sight to behold, especially in this beautiful color combination: British Racing Green (color code 75) with a beige leather interior. The paint was repainted in the 1990s. There is no welding on the bodywork, and the car is damage-free and very solid. The chrome and lighting are in excellent condition. The black soft top is in good shape with no tears. Extensive photos, including underside views, are available for a good impression.

Interior

The interior remains neat with only minimal signs of use. The beige leather seats are free of cracks. The large, almost vertical steering wheel and elegant gauges create a pleasant driving environment. The dashboard features a beautiful wood finish. Seats are adjustable, and the interior includes optional heating. The trunk is tidy and contains the spare tire, wrench, and jack.

Technical

With just 2,852 miles (4,590 km) on the odometer, both the engine and transmission have been overhauled. The underside of the car is very solid and well-maintained. Adjustable Spax telescopic shock absorbers are fitted at the rear, and KONI Classic shock absorbers at the front. New bushings have been installed. The car starts, shifts, brakes, and drives very well and is ready for its next owner.

General

The TR4 was produced from 1961 through 1965 as the successor to the TR3. The first series of the TR4 shares many features with the TR3 but offers more interior space thanks to a longer wheelbase. It features larger doors with downward-swinging side windows and a distinctive large grille. A notable design element is the hump on the hood housing the two carburetors. Designed by Michelotti, the TR4 is considered one of the most beautiful in the Triumph TR series. Due to its focus on the American market, relatively few units were sold in Europe. The 4-cylinder engine was bored out to 2138 cc. Thanks to its sporty handling, some TR4s were used by the British police. The TR4 was succeeded in 1965 by the TR4 A IRS, which features independent rear suspension for improved ride comfort and handling.
