The soul of speed: Alfa Romeo and the legacy of the GTV

Long before speed became a commercial promise, for Alfa Romeo it was a matter of identity. Founded in Milan in 1910, the brand quickly grew into a symbol of passion, engineering, and competition. While other manufacturers built cars to transport people, Alfa Romeo built cars to make hearts beat faster.

In the early years, Alfa dominated circuits with legendary drivers such as Tazio Nuvolari and Giuseppe Farina, who made history with their machines. Victories in the Mille Miglia and the first Formula 1 championships laid the foundation for a reputation that would stand for decades.

But the real story of Alfa Romeo is not only found at the absolute top of motorsport — it also lives in the cars that were closer to the people. That is where the GTV comes into the picture.

The birth of an icon: the Alfetta GTV

In the 70s, Alfa Romeo introduced the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV, a sports coupé that combined elegance with pure racing genes. With its transaxle layout (gearbox at the rear for better weight distribution), the GTV was no ordinary street car — it was designed with competition in mind.

On circuits and rally tracks, the GTV proved its worth. In the European Touring Car Championship and various rally competitions, the car demonstrated that it was both durable and fast. Teams appreciated its balance and reliability, while drivers enjoyed the direct steering and the characteristic Alfa sound.

That is perhaps the essence of Alfa Romeo's motorsport history: it is not just about winning, but about how you win.

The inheritance today

Although Alfa Romeo is less prominently involved in the rally and racing world these days, the spirit of the GTV lives on. Classic races, enthusiast clubs, and restorations keep the memory alive. And when a GTV is started today, it is not just an engine that sounds — but an echo of a time when racing was pure, raw, and romantic.

That echo currently resonates in our showroom, where a truly special GTV 2.0 stands in fully rally-ready condition. Professionally built in Italy, the car came into Dutch possession a few years ago and has since successfully explored rally tracks in the hands of a skilled driver. He was very enthusiastic about the car, but because he has several other rally cars in his stable, he ultimately chose to prepare the car he had previously driven for years, and with which he has a real connection, for re-evaluation. Consequently, we were asked to find a buyer for this GTV, built according to Group 2 regulations. And who wouldn't want to stand at the start of a historic rally in such a legendary car? We certainly would, but we already own a GTV; otherwise, we would know what to do! However, for the Alfist who doesn't want to build something themselves but wants to jump right in, here lies an excellent opportunity. A Dutch historic rally championship could be in the offing, or perhaps a quiet start with the famous (demo) Eifel Rallye around Daun in Germany. Truly an experience that you, as a rally enthusiast, must have on your checklist.

We could make a whole list of everything that has been prepared on this 1982 Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0, but that would be a very long list. It is much better to make an appointment so that we can show and demonstrate all the ins and outs to you on the spot. Because that is what it is ultimately about: letting you feel the emotion. De ziel van snelheid: Alfa Romeo en de erfenis van de GTV

Lang voordat snelheid een commerciële belofte werd, was het voor Alfa Romeo een kwestie van identiteit. Opgericht in 1910 in Milaan, groeide het merk al snel uit tot een symbool van passie, techniek en competitie. Terwijl andere fabrikanten auto’s bouwden om mensen te verplaatsen, bouwde Alfa Romeo auto’s om harten sneller te laten kloppen.

In de vroege jaren domineerde Alfa circuits met legendarische coureurs zoals Tazio Nuvolari en Giuseppe Farina, die met hun machines geschiedenis schreven. De overwinningen in de Mille Miglia en de eerste Formule 1-kampioenschappen legden de basis voor een reputatie die decennia zou standhouden.

Maar het echte verhaal van Alfa Romeo zit niet alleen in de absolute top van de autosport — het leeft ook in de auto’s die dichter bij de mensen stonden. Daar komt de GTV in beeld.

De geboorte van een icoon: de Alfetta GTV

In de jaren 70 introduceerde Alfa Romeo de Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV, een sportcoupé die elegantie combineerde met pure racegenen. Met zijn transaxle-layout (versnellingsbak achterin voor betere gewichtsverdeling) was de GTV geen gewone straatauto — hij was ontworpen met competitie in gedachten.

Op circuits en rallypaden bewees de GTV zijn waarde. In het Europese toerwagenkampioenschap en diverse rallycompetities liet de auto zien dat hij zowel duurzaam als snel was. Teams waardeerden zijn balans en betrouwbaarheid, terwijl coureurs genoten van de directe besturing en het karakteristieke Alfa-geluid.

Dat is misschien wel de kern van Alfa Romeo’s autosportgeschiedenis: het gaat niet alleen om winnen, maar om hoe je wint.

De erfenis vandaag

Hoewel Alfa Romeo zich tegenwoordig minder nadrukkelijk in de rally- en racewereld begeeft, leeft de geest van de GTV voort. Klassieke races, liefhebbersclubs en restauraties houden de herinnering levend. En wanneer een GTV vandaag de dag wordt gestart, klinkt niet alleen een motor — maar een echo van een tijd waarin racen puur, rauw en romantisch was.

Die echo klinkt op dit moment ook in onze showroom, waar een wel heel bijzondere GTV 2.0 in geheel rallyklare conditie staat. Op professionele wijze gebouwd in Italië, kwam de auto enkele jaren geleden in Nederlands bezit en heeft inmiddels met succes de rallypaden verkend in de handen van een bekwame rijder. Die was zeer enthousiast over de auto, maar omdat er meerdere rallyauto’s in zijn stal staan, heeft hij er toch voor gekozen om de auto waarmee hij eerder al jaren reed, en een echte binding mee heeft, weer gereed te maken. Aldus werd ons gevraagd een koper voor deze, volgens het Group 2 reglement opgebouwde GTV te vinden. En wie wil nu niet in zo’n legendarische auto aan de start staan van een historische rally? Wij in ieder geval graag, maar wij bezitten al zo’n GTV, anders wisten we het wel! Maar voor de Alfist die niet zelf iets wil bouwen maar gelijk wil instappen ligt hier een uitgelezen kans. Een Nederlands historisch rallykampioenschap zou in het verschiet kunnen liggen, of bijvoorbeeld eens rustig beginnen met de bekende (demo) Eifel Rallye rondom Daun in Duitsland. Echt een ervaring die je als rallyliefhebber op je af te vinken lijstje moet hebben staan.

We kunnen een hele opsomming maken van wat er allemaal is geprepareerd aan deze Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0 van bouwjaar 1982 , maar dat zou wel een erg lange lijst worden. Veel beter is om een afspraak te maken en wij u ter plekke alle ins- en outs kunnen tonen en demonstreren. Want daar gaat het uiteindelijk om: emotie laten voelen. We hebben al een mooi traject in gedachten waar we u kunnen laten zien en voelen hoe geweldig het is om deze Alfa te berijden.
