CERISE – AUSTIN SEVEN 1929 - Restoration Summary Cerise is a 1929 Austin Seven which I acquired in 2015 and brought with me to France in 2016. I purchased my first Austin Seven in 1965 and, over the years, I have stripped down, repaired, restored and rebuilt no fewer than 19 motorcars. Several of my restorations have been awarded prizes at classic car shows and events. Cerise has undergone thorough mechanical and cosmetic restoration, whilst retaining many of its original 1929 components as well as its period characteristics and equipment. Chassis, running gear and braking Chassis and axles completely dismantled, cleaned, repainted and reassembled. Leaf springs and new bearings front and rear. Dampers, propshaft and universal joints replaced. Brake shoes relined. Original wheels completely rebuilt and spoked with stronger, superior quality spokes, then repainted. Tyres conforming to original 1929 dimensions. Steering Steering column and box completely dismantled and overhauled with new bushes. Original 1929 ignition advance and retard levers retained. Engine Engine completely dismantled and cleaned. Cylinder block rebored and fitted with new pistons and rings. Crankshaft ground. New connecting rods fitted. New angular contact ball bearings at the front of the crankcase and new roller main bearing at the rear. Improved lubrication system with easily accessible external oil filter, to competition-type specification. Camshaft reconditioned with 'Sports' specification profile. Lightened flywheel. Clutch mechanism completely overhauled and fitted with new springs. Original 1929 engine-gearbox assembly completely rebuilt and currently running in. Gearbox and exhaust Gearbox completely rebuilt with new close-ratio gear train. New bearings front and rear. New exhaust system fitted to a 'Sports' specification exhaust manifold. Bodywork and equipment Lightweight bodywork with timber frame, designed for two occupants. Clad in light aluminium alloy panels. Two adjustable aero-screens. Centre and side mirrors. Folding hood frame folding down behind the seat. Hood and tonneau cover fabrics, with fixing accessories, zip fastening and 'Lift-the-Dot' studs, supplied with the car, together with templates for the front supports. Electrics Original 1929 ignition control panel retained. Original ammeter and ignition warning light. Summer/ winter switch for battery charge rate adjustment. Lighting control for sidelights and headlamps. Original 1929 headlamps retained, completely dismantled, overhauled and reassembled. 6-volt battery used as a practical solution replacing the original dynamo, which has become increasingly rare. A spare battery is supplied. Oil pressure and maintenance Original 1929 oil pressure gauge retained; it is an essential element for engine monitoring. The lubrication system allows easy access to both oil jets so they can be cleared if blocked. Castrol R motor oil has always been used and a quantity will be supplied with the car. This oil must not under any circumstances be mixed with any other oil. Period instruments and fittings French 8-day clock in perfect working order. Rare blue enamel plate from the original supplier — a particularly scarce item. Original patent plate, corresponding to the car's period. Tachometer installed but currently non-functional; a new battery is supplied. Restoration philosophy Cerise's restoration was carried out with particular attention paid to mechanical reliability, ease of maintenance and preservation of its original 1929 elements. Where certain original parts proved rare or unsuitable for regular use, discreet modifications respectful of the original spirit were made, drawing on...
