The French car brand Panhard et Levassor was founded in 1887, making it one of the earliest manufacturers of passenger cars. The brand laid the groundwork for many features we take for granted today, such as the clutch pedal and the front-mounted radiator. Additionally, the French marque was renowned for its distinctive and stylish designs; this magnificent Panhard Levassor X47 is a prime example. Produced in 1926 with a wooden body, the car was originally delivered in France. The wooden body is covered in synthetic leather, utilizing the American "Weymann patent" method. The car was exported from the Netherlands to New Zealand in 1983 before returning to the Netherlands in 2017. It remained completely original—including the Panhard-refined valveless sleeve-valve engine (Knight patent)—providing the ideal foundation for a full restoration.
This Panhard Levassor X47 has undergone a comprehensive and highly professional restoration in the Netherlands. The Weymann bodywork was completely rebuilt, and all woodwork is new. Naturally, the exterior synthetic leather covering was also fully renewed, featuring a stylish blue-and-black color scheme. This unique vehicle was restored to an exceptionally high standard, with meticulous attention to originality and detail. Fortunately, the stunning Marchal headlights have been preserved and remain in excellent condition. The fuel gauge (located atop the fuel tank) is another magnificent, original detail. The impressive large wire wheels, fitted with new Blockley tires, are also in excellent condition. The doors close securely and properly, and the rear luggage rack operates smoothly. It is evident that this Panhard Levassor has undergone a top-quality restoration.
The interior of this Panhard Levassor X47 is also in excellent, fully restored condition. The beautiful woodwork is not only stunning to look at but has also been restored with great skill. Both bench seats have been reupholstered, and the headliner has been completely renewed. In addition to the original gauges, an oil pressure gauge and a water temperature gauge have been installed. The dashboard, featuring various original switches, looks magnificent and is in excellent condition. The windshield is a two-piece unit, with an upper section that opens easily (as per the original design). The wooden steering wheel offers a solid, comfortable grip and is a visual delight.
Under the hood lies a fully rebuilt 1900 cc Citroën engine, sourced from a 1938 Chenard-Walcker. During the expert restoration, an attempt was made to restore the original 1500 cc sleeve-valve engine, but this proved to be too complex a task; consequently, the decision was made to install a different, period-correct engine. The original Knight sleeve-valve engine is still included with the car. During the engine installation, a new fuel supply system and fuel pump were fitted. The Citroën engine was completely rebuilt during the restoration, with the cylinder liners, pistons, and connecting rods being replaced. Furthermore, the oil pump was overhauled and the valves were ground. Fortunately, the controls for the original fuel venting system have been retained. During the restoration, the 6-volt system was also converted to 12 volts. It is evident that virtually all technical components were replaced or overhauled during the restoration process. The undercarriage of this 100-year-old Panhard Levassor is also in impressive condition. We have rarely seen such a magnificent and expertly restored car.
