The seller offers for sale this 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL, powered by a 3.5-litre V8 engine, paired with an automatic transmission. This example has had only two owners, with the last owner having kept the car for over 48 years, and it is offered as one of the last examples of the long-running W109 series. It is fully optioned and further equipped with the desirable factory Eberspächer auxiliary heater. A number of parts have been replaced and repairs carried out over the past year. The paintwork has faded with age, and the front fenders have received repair work in the past around the headlight surrounds; a paint refresh would suit the car well. The original head unit is currently missing.

Introduced in 1968, the W109 range topped Mercedes-Benz’s saloon line-up and introduced buyers to the marque’s self-levelling air suspension, a novel feature for the era that gave the big saloon a supremely composed ride. The 300 SEL, fitted with the 3.5-litre V8, combined the model’s stately proportions with a smooth and effortless drivetrain, and the range as a whole cemented Mercedes-Benz’s reputation for building some of the most refined and technically advanced saloons of its time.

Beneath its formal styling, the W109 offered genuine engineering sophistication for the period, including its four-wheel independent suspension and, on air-sprung models, self-levelling at the rear. The underbody on this example is described as solid, and the seller notes that the air suspension gradually loses ride height after roughly one to one and a half hours, a known characteristic that owners of these air-sprung Mercedes models will be familiar with. As one of the last of the breed, this 300 SEL offers an interesting basis for further recommissioning and represents a slice of Mercedes-Benz saloon history.
