Beschrijving

The One Twenty, a revolutionary model for the Packard brand, was launched in January 1935. However, the 12th series had already been introduced at the end of August 1934. It comprised the usual model ranges: the Eight, Super Eight and Twelve. Another new feature was that the Eight was now available with three wheelbases instead of two; in return, the shortest wheelbase of the Twelve was discontinued. Despite the ongoing economic crisis, Packard treated itself to numerous technical improvements. As usual, the visual modernisation was rather restrained. The bodywork was given slightly more rounded contours and the radiator grilles were once again set at a slightly steeper angle. The headlamps were fitted with torpedo-shaped housings, which were usually painted in the same colour as the car; a chrome strip was planned for the sides, which appeared in contemporary illustrations but was omitted shortly after production began. All engines were upgraded with aluminium cylinder heads and an increase in compression ratio, resulting in higher power output: 130 bhp for the Eight and 150 bhp for the Super Eight. The Packard Eight on offer here, with its 130 hp 5.2-litre straight-eight engine, was presumably imported into Switzerland as a new car and used as an official vehicle. In any case, until the mid-1960s, the large five-seater saloon – with additional folding rear seats for a further two passengers – was registered to the Fire Commission in Wollerau. As early as 1970, the Packard was taken over by the seller’s father – a car mechanic with his own business – and restored over the following years. The bodywork was repainted in the current blue colour and the seats were reupholstered in grey fabric. The car was also overhauled and regularly serviced in the company’s own workshop. Over the past 56 years, the saloon has never been registered and has been used with a dealer license plate for family outings and to take part in a wide variety of events. The Packard has spent most of the last few years in the company’s showroom and has been used very little. The impressive saloon is currently in good, roadworthy condition overall. However, a thorough inspection with some minor repairs will certainly be necessary ahead of an upcoming roadworthiness test. This magnificent Packard will be handed over to a new enthusiast along with its 1963 vehicle registration certificate, which is still registered to the Wollerau Fire Commission.
