Beschrijving

The true successor to the Chevrolet Confederate in the lower mid-range segment did not appear until the middle of the 1933 model year. Its wheelbase had been reduced by 3″ to 2'718 mm. Although the overhead-valve inline six-cylinder engine now had a capacity of 2'966 cc, it produced, like its predecessor, 60 bhp. Whilst the Confederate had featured a synchronised gearbox, this synchronisation was omitted again on the standard Mercury. The bodywork had been aerodynamically improved and featured V-shaped, rear-sloping radiator grilles. Due to the short model cycle, only three different body styles were produced: two coupés with two or four seats and a two-door saloon with five seats. There were few changes in the first full model year of the new series, which had been renamed from Standard Mercury to Standard. In addition to the three models from the previous year, a four-door Phaeton and a four-door saloon, each with five seats, were introduced midway through the model year. The styling of the Standard models remained unchanged in 1935, but a larger engine was introduced, taken from the mid-range Master model. In the Standard, however, the 3'388 cc six-cylinder engine produced only 74 bhp. The Chevrolet Standard Six Sedan offered here was manufactured in November 1934 and was probably first registered in the USA in April 1935. Many years ago, this attractive saloon was imported into Switzerland and was evidently restored a few years ago. In 2016, the Chevrolet was acquired by the seller, who subsequently had a new fuel tank fitted and the carburetor overhauled. In autumn 2016, he noticed that the engine was not functioning correctly – which led to an engine overhaul, including the fitting of a new cylinder head specially sourced from the USA. At the same time, the gearbox was also overhauled. In 2017, the alternator was overhauled and the ring gear and pinion on the rear axle were replaced. In 2022, the front axle was overhauled, and the exhaust system was replaced. Receipts totaling approximately CHF 60‘000 for the work carried out are available and will be handed over with the vehicle. Over the past 10 years, this little Chevrolet has covered just under 5‘000 km, meaning it is now in good to very good overall condition. The most recent veteran MOT took place in March 2022, meaning the saloon can be registered immediately in most cantons of German-speaking Switzerland.
