An exceptionally rare 1933 Jaguar SS1 Tourer, this original discovery has spent many years in storage, patiently awaiting restoration. The car is in unrestored condition, offering a unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to restore a true milestone in British automotive history.
Finding an SS1 Tourer in project form is nearly impossible. This is an excellent chance to acquire a highly sought-after pre-war British automobile in authentic condition. The SS1 was the direct forerunner of the Jaguar marque and embodied qualities that would later define Jaguar: grace, space, and pace.
The initials "SS" originally stood for Swallow Sidecar & Coachbuilding Company, founded in Blackpool, England, by William Walmsley in 1922. After entering automobile production in 1926, the company introduced the revolutionary SS1 Coupe in October 1931. Designed under William Lyons, the SS1 featured a low, underslung chassis supplied by the Standard Motor Company, a six-cylinder engine, and a four-speed gearbox.
Its striking proportions included an exceptionally long bonnet, a compact passenger compartment, and flowing helmet-style front wings, creating one of the most distinctive sporting designs of the era. The SS1 established the styling philosophy that would become synonymous with Jaguar: elegant, high-performance automobiles offering exceptional value.
Production of Swallow-bodied cars ended in 1933 when SS Cars Ltd. was formed. The SS1 remained in production until 1936 and is now recognized as one of the most significant pre-war British sporting cars. This is a rare opportunity to own one of the earliest and most influential sporting cars produced by the company that would become Jaguar.
Opportunities to acquire an original, unrestored SS1 Tourer are extremely scarce, making this a truly special restoration candidate with tremendous historical significance.
