A rare opportunity to acquire a stunning and very rare V-12 Spider from the golden era of Ferrari

The 61st of 200 examples built of the 275 GTS; the seventh made from 19 right-hand-drive cars

Delivered new to the United Kingdom via Maranello Concessionaires in July 1965

Offered in its factory-correct colour combination of Rosso Cina over a Pelle Beige Connolly leather interior

Subject to a full restoration by California-based European Auto Restoration over 1994 and 1995; exhaustively detailed by four accompanying photo folders with dated correspondence

Later restored again to concours-standard quality by Brick Kiln Group of Wantage

Engine rebuilt by Chris Holley and Light Car Company in the early 2000s

Retained by the vendor since 2012; known ownership history from new

Certified by Ferrari Classiche in April 2010 and accompanied by its important “Red Book”; recognised to retain its matching-numbers chassis, engine, and gearbox

Supported by a history report by marque expert Marcel Massini, Ferrari 275 books and manuals in a leather folio, plus leather tool roll

At the Paris Salon in October 1964 Ferrari introduced the 275 model line, consisting of a closed berlinetta (GTB) and an open spider (GTS)—both of which were designed by Pininfarina. Production of the berlinetta form was licensed to Scaglietti, while responsibility for the open-topped cars remained with Pininfarina’s factory in Grugliasco.

The Spider was completely different in appearance and proportion to its closed sibling, and it was constructed of steel with aluminium doors, hood, and trunk lid. Uncovered headlamps, triple-louvered wings, a tapered rear end, and standard Borrani wire wheels were the Spider’s major physical identifiers beyond the cloth top, and those features were eventually carried over to the 330 and 365 GTS variants which followed. Underneath this unique skin, though, the 275 GTS bears identical mechanical components as the performance-oriented 275 GTB, including a rear transaxle that minimised weight and optimised distribution of mass. As a result, both body styles of this exceptional model share a legendary reputation for superb balance.

Only 200 examples of the 275 GTS were built over an 18-month period of production, making the model far rarer than its closed sibling. Prized by marque enthusiasts today as the luxurious grand touring expression of the celebrated 3.3-litre “Columbo” 60-degree V-12 platform producing 260 brake horsepower at 7,000 rpm, the 275 GTS has evolved into one of the era’s most collectable open Ferraris.

The example offered here was the 61st made from the build run that comprised only 200 cars. It was the seventh of only 19 right-hand-drive 275 GTS. With its steering its speedometer reading in miles, the Ferrari was destined for delivery to the United Kingdom. Here, it was imported by Colonel Ronnie Hoare’s legendary Maranello Concessionaires concern, being presented by the Maranello factory in Rosso Cina paintwork over a Beige leather upholstery. Today, the 275 GTS retains this iconic factory-correct colour pairing.

Chassis number 07293 was delivered to its first owner, one Charles Lucas, in August 1965. Shortly afterwards it was registered for the road with the United Kingdom number plates “GGO 491C”. By 1967, the 275 GTS had been sold to R G Bond of Cheshire and, in 1972, it was acquired by R Hands of London. Bernard Kain bought the Ferrari in 1974 and kept hold of it for the next 11 years. From 1985 to 1990, the Spider was owned by noted collector Adrian Liddell of Hampshire before later coming into the ownership of Joseph Fung, a resident of Hong Kong with a car collection domiciled in England.

In the care of Mr Fung, over 1994 and 1995 the Ferrari was entrusted to European Auto Restoration (now trading as European Collectibles), based in Costa Mesa, California for full and no-expense-spared restoration. The process is detailed in impressive detail by four weighty photo album folders with accompanying dated correspondence, which are offered alongside the rest of the car’s impressive history files. Mr Fung took the car to Hong Kong, where it was registered as “FR 275”. Mr Fung later returned the Ferrari to the United Kingdom for permanent storage. The car was subsequently presented for renewed restoration work undertaken by Brick Kiln Group of Wantage, who conducted concours-quality renovation for the Ferrari. Around the mid-2000s, the engine was rebuilt by Chris Holley and the Light Car Company.

Chassis number 07293 was certified by Ferrari Classiche in April 2010 and is accompanied at auction with its important “Red Book”. In 2012 the 275 GTS was acquired by its consigning owner, who has continued to maintain and uphold this important Ferrari, with around 1,000 miles accrued in their care. Offered with a meticulously documented history file, matching-numbers chassis, engine, and gearbox, factory-correct colour combination, and Ferrari Classiche certification, this highly sought-after open-topped Prancing Horse awaits its next owner for prime convertible V-12 enjoyment.
