Highlights:

– 4.7-litre (289 cubic inch) V8 petrol engine, manual transmission

– Fitted with an Edelbrock carburettor

– Hidden headlamps operated via an interior lever

– Recent mechanical work including overhauled brakes, documented by the seller

The seller offers for sale this 1967 Mercury Cougar, powered by a 4.7-litre (289 cubic inch) V8 petrol engine, paired with a manual transmission. This Cougar is a matching numbers example: the chassis number in the engine compartment corresponds with the number in the passenger door. The V8 is fitted with an Edelbrock carburettor and the car runs on petrol only, with no LPG installation present. The characteristic hidden headlamps open by means of a lever on the inside of the car. The car was appraised in 2023 at 30,000 euros, with an EHAC quality classification of 2/3, and the appraisal report notes that the car has been professionally resprayed in the past. Following the seller’s purchase, the car received a thorough technical check, during which the brakes were overhauled, the steering ball joints were fitted with grease nipples, the wheel alignment was adjusted, the oil pressure sensor was replaced, the idle setting was adjusted and the driver’s seat was given new filling. The seller notes two points of attention: the dashboard lighting is currently not working, and no radio is installed, although a classic period radio is supplied with the car and could be fitted.

The Cougar was introduced in 1967 as Mercury’s upscale interpretation of the pony car formula and was an immediate success, earning the title of Motor Trend Car of the Year in its debut season. Built on a stretched Mustang platform, the Cougar offered a longer wheelbase, a more refined ride and distinctive styling, with its electric shaver grille and hidden headlamps giving it one of the most recognisable front ends of the decade. Sequential rear turn signals added a further touch of theatre.

First-year Cougars occupy an appealing position in the classic American car market: they share their proven mechanicals with the Mustang, yet offer greater exclusivity and a more luxurious character. With its matching numbers status, recent mechanical attention and documented appraisal, this 1967 example is an attractive proposition for enthusiasts of American classics.
