Plymouth Deluxe | 1950

Highlights:

– 3.6-litre (217.8 cui) flathead six-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission

– Four-door Sedan bodystyle, from Plymouth’s shorter-wheelbase 1950 Deluxe series

– Part of Plymouth’s 1949-50 “second series”, the marque’s first true postwar redesign

– Same flathead six and three-speed gearbox used across the entire 1950 Plymouth range, valued today for their simplicity and durability

The seller offers for sale this 1950 Plymouth Deluxe, powered by a 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine, paired with a three-speed manual transmission. This four-door Deluxe sedan is fitted with Plymouth’s familiar 217.8-cubic-inch flathead six, driving through a column-shifted three-speed manual gearbox, the same combination fitted across the entire 1950 Plymouth range.

Plymouth entered the 1949 model year with its first true postwar redesign, having built only lightly updated versions of its 1942 cars through 1946, 1947 and 1948 while the rest of the industry caught up. That new “second series” body, with its flatter roofline, smoother sides and more integrated front fenders, carried over into 1950 with only detail changes. The range was split into two series on two different wheelbases: the shorter, more affordable Deluxe offered here, and the longer, better-appointed Special Deluxe. Both used the same 217.8-cubic-inch flathead six, producing around 97 horsepower and driving through a three-speed manual gearbox with column shift. Plymouth positioned itself throughout this period as the value-minded, dependable member of the Chrysler family, and one of Detroit’s “low-priced three” alongside Ford and Chevrolet, even if it consistently sold behind both of its bigger rivals. The Deluxe and Special Deluxe names themselves were short-lived: for 1951, Plymouth replaced them with the Concord, Cambridge and Cranbrook, drawing on a new naming convention that would carry the brand forward into the 1950s.

The appeal of a car like this lies in its honesty: a simple, durable flathead six, a straightforward three-speed manual, and the smooth, integrated-fender “ponton” styling that Plymouth would keep using, with only detail updates, all the way through to 1954. For collectors looking for an accessible entry point into early postwar American motoring, without the complexity, expense or fuss of some of its flashier contemporaries, a Deluxe like this one offers a genuine, unpretentious slice of Detroit’s low-priced motoring history.
