Swift Ten | 1931

Highlights:

– 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine, petrol, manual transmission

– Rare British-built Swift Ten, one of only a few surviving examples of the marque

– Right-hand-drive coupe body with rear dickey seat and folding soft top

– Reasonable paintwork, rubber seals, chrome trim and lighting

The seller offers for sale this 1931 Swift Ten, powered by a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine, paired with a manual transmission. This Swift Ten was inherited by the current owner together with another classic vehicle from his father and has stood for a while since. Before that, the car was reportedly driven under its own power, and it is now offered for sale due to a lack of time and space. The paintwork is in reasonable order, as are the rubber seals, windows, chrome trim and lighting. As the car has stood for some time, it will need recommissioning before returning to the road, and no recent maintenance history is known.

The Swift Motor Company of Coventry built cars from 1900 until the marque’s closure in 1931, making this example one of the very last cars to leave the factory before production ceased. Throughout the 1920s Swift’s mainstay was its dependable 10hp four-cylinder model, and from 1926 the engine was bored out to 1,190 cc to create the P-type seen here, paired with a four-speed gearbox and four-wheel brakes. Only a small number of Swifts of any type are believed to survive today, making this a genuine rarity.

The 1.2-litre side-valve four-cylinder engine is a simple, sturdy unit typical of well-engineered British light cars of the period, and this example carries a right-hand-drive coupe body with a rear dickey seat and a folding soft top, a configuration that made the Swift Ten a versatile and characterful small car in period. Its rarity today, combined with honest, straightforward engineering, gives it particular appeal for collectors seeking something genuinely uncommon.
