Ferrari 250 GT Drogo – Chassis 2391 GT

Built from an original Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2 by GTO Engineering for the current owner, this extensively developed historic competition Ferrari combines aluminium Drogo-style coachwork, a substantial European racing history and a 3. 8-litre Roelofs Engineering V12. Road registered and accompanied by full FIA papers, it also retains its original Ferrari engine and gearbox, supplied separately.

BUILD & PROVENANCE

The car was sourced in Turin in the late 1990s after Kevin O’Rourke of Moto Technique, Michael Scott of the Ferrari 96 Club and Modena Engineering, and racing driver Neil Lawson-Baker travelled together to inspect it. Lawson-Baker intended to race the car once completed.

The seller was Stephen Griswold, a well-known American Ferrari dealer and buyer. The car was partially assembled in a bodyshop, with its competition conversion already underway and the aluminium Drogo-style body accompanying it.

GTO Engineering subsequently acquired the project and was commissioned by the current owner to complete the build, using the original 250 GTE as its basis.

Lawrence Kett of G&A Fabrications completed the aluminium coachwork in the style of the Ferrari competition cars bodied by Piero Drogo’s Carrozzeria Sports Cars. Kett also applied the distinctive red and pale blue livery, inspired by the Maranello Concessionaires racing colours.

COMPETITION HISTORY & DEVELOPMENT

Larry and Nathan Kinch subsequently raced the car extensively throughout Europe. Its documented event history includes:

• Nürburgring Oldtimer Grand Prix

• Silverstone Classic

• Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or, Dijon-Prenois

• Grand Prix de Pau Historique

• Imola Classic

• Spa Classic

• Dix Mille Tours, Paul Ricard

The car was progressively developed throughout its competition life. Laurence Pearce was involved in its later race development and running, with substantial chassis and suspension work, anti-tramp axle modifications and extensive redesign of the fuel system, alongside numerous smaller improvements.

This development is particularly apparent when inspecting the car today. Having prepared and run competition Ferraris through Scuderia Ecosse’s British GT, FIA GT and Le Mans programmes, we recognise the quality of the work throughout its chassis, suspension, fuel system and coachwork.

The engineering is carefully considered, with successive improvements incorporated into a cohesive competition package. It is an extensively used and developed racing Ferrari with a substantial history of its own.

ENGINE, GEARBOX & ACCOMPANYING PARTS

The fitted engine is a 3. 8-litre Ferrari V12 built by Roelofs Engineering specifically for this car.

The installed gearbox was also rebuilt and modified by Roelofs Engineering for competition use. Its casing, numbered 539-55485, is documented as originally coming from Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider chassis 2491 GT.

Separate from the installed competition drivetrain, the original 250 GTE engine and gearbox accompany the car:

• Original Ferrari engine, numbered 2391 GT, identified as the matching engine for the underlying 250 GTE

• Original 250 GTE gearbox, numbered 508E 55967

A custom-built rear-exit exhaust with larger silencers is currently fitted. A second, considerably less silenced side-exit competition exhaust accompanies the car, providing an alternative configuration according to event noise requirements.

A spare set of wheel rims is also included.

SALE & ENQUIRIES

Entrusted to Roden Jones for sale on behalf of its owner, this is a serious historic competition Ferrari whose preparation reflects years of specialist engineering and race development.

For a buyer seeking a front-engined V12 Ferrari with an established historic competition record, original Ferrari identity and its original mechanical components retained, it offers an exceptionally interesting proposition.

We have researched the car’s ownership, construction and development history and would be pleased to discuss the supporting documentation, technical specification and accompanying parts with prospective buyers.
