Beschrijving
Now available from RFH Classics we have this beautifully presented 1966 (D) MGB GT, finished in its factory correct Tartan Red with a period Red Leather interior featuring Black piping. This is an early example of the well loved MGB GT and is now offered following an extensive restoration with very limited use thereafter. The car comes with a substantial history file and the added distinction of retaining its original matching-numbers engine.
Introduced in October 1965, the MGB GT brought a new dimension to the already successful MGB Roadster. Styled with considerable input from the renowned Italian design house Pininfarina, its elegant fixed-head roofline and practical rear hatchback transformed the MGB into a rather more versatile grand touring car.
Our example is a particularly early car, with information contained in its history file suggesting that it was number 3, 032 to leave the production line. Accompanying the car is its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate indicating that it was built for the UK home market and was originally Tartan Red with Red interior trim. The certificate also confirms that the car retains its original matching numbers engine, an increasingly desirable feature in a classic approaching 61 years old. We have a record of the supplying dealer being Joseph Cockshoot Ltd who we found to be a famous English coachbuilder and car dealer based in Manchester.
Contained within the history file is an original V5 registration document issued in 1983, confirming that the car's first owner, Mrs Rumens of Leicester, retained the MG for some 17 years before selling it to Mr Horner of Morecambe in 1983. This type of early documentation is always pleasing to find, particularly with a car of this age, and the file also contains further records relating to subsequent owners. The history file itself is substantial and makes for fascinating reading, with an extensive collection of invoices and receipts dating from 1983 through to 2017, together with a large selection of previous MOT certificates covering the period from 1984 to 2012, although not every certificate is present.
Interestingly, the 2005 MOT records the mileage at 70, 889 miles, whilst the following year's certificate shows just 92 miles, suggesting that a new or replacement speedometer was fitted around 2006. Subsequent mileage records are consistent with the lower reading, although the car's total mileage cannot be verified. In addition to the invoices and MOT certificates, there is a large collection of photographs documenting the car's extensive restoration. These provide a valuable insight into the work undertaken and are a particularly welcome addition to the history of this early GT.
Under the bonnet sits the familiar 1798cc petrol 4 cylinder engine that is running lead free. We have now undertaken out our usual preparation work although on this car we have also fitted a new Overdrive unit as the existing unit was found to slip under load. The car is now also prepared with a fresh MOT test until Sept 27 providing peace of mind for the new owner. For us, the appeal of this MGB GT is the combination of its early production date, matching-numbers originality and extensive supporting history, together with the obvious care and attention that has gone into its restoration. It is a lovely example of a classic British sporting coupe that remains as appealing today as it was when first introduced over 60 years ago.
Viewing by appointment only at our showroom, where prospective purchasers will be given ample opportunity to inspect both the car and its comprehensive history. The car qualifies for Historic tax and is ULEZ exempt. MOT exempt due to its age, it has been regularly MOT tested, most recently passing in September 2026. Comes with a vehicle history certificate confirming no finance or insurance loss.
