You know what's gloriously odd about the Alfa Romeo 75? That it very nearly rolled straight off a drawing board, wheelbase and all. Alfa turned seventy-five in 1985, and to celebrate they launched a saloon that looked as though an irate industrialist had designed it with a ruler. Angles, wedges, a bulging rear end nobody had ordered yet everybody came to adore. It was the last truly rear-wheel-drive Alfa before Fiat took over the wallet and the steering wheel, and you can feel that in everything. This car is still pure Milan. Still pure engineer-with-stubborn-ideas.

And oh, those stubborn ideas. The handbrake that seems lifted straight from a Boeing 747. The transaxle, with the gearbox mounted at the rear for that sacred weight distribution. And the dashboard, where someone was apparently instructed to fit as many buttons as possible in as many illogical places as possible. You'll spend the first week hunting for your window switches. After that, you'll never want anything else. At Alfa Romeo we simply cover all of this with one word: character.

My grandfather held the Alfa dealership on the Heilooërdijk in Alkmaar, so I was raised around cars like these the way other children are raised with a puppy. My own first car was a rusted-through 33 Sportwagon, and I can tell you: the word rust and the word Alfa were inseparable for decades. Which is exactly why it's so special when one comes along that has simply survived the curse.
