Estimated Price: £75,000 - £95,000
The 3.2 Carrera is revered as the ultimate development of the original 911 that first appeared in 1963. These final cars (before being replaced by the more complicated 964) were the most flexible and usable of Butzi Porsche's original design. Launched in 1984 and reviving the 'Carrera' name for the first time since 1977, these were the ultimate 1980's sports cars.
The all-alloy, flat-six engine, which had been fuel-injected since 1971, received a final stretch to 3164cc, giving a torque-rich 231bhp - enough to propel the lithe and slippery coupé to over 150mph, with 0-60mph coming up in 5.6 seconds. Cars built from September 1986 onwards were fitted with the more user-friendly G50 Getrag gearbox, but all 3.2 Carreras feature galvanised bodies, which together with Porsche's legendary build quality, ensure that these classics are long lasting.
The car presented here is a C16 (UK-supplied) 1989-model year ('K’ programme) example from the final year of 3.2 production, before the introduction of the 964. More specifically, it is a Carrera 3.2 Sport which was a UK-only model and came factory-fitted with a black lip front spoiler, a rear whale tail rear spoiler, Sports seats (more dished squabs than the basic seats) and Bilstein Sport shock absorbers. In addition, it was optioned with a sunroof (650) and the sought-after paint colour of Silver Metallic (980/S7). The 1989 model year also received wider rear Fuchs wheels, thicker anti-roll bars and the 964 windscreen as standard.
Iconic Auctioneers had the honour of selling this car back in May 2025 at our ‘SuperCar Fest’ Sale, when it presented very differently, as a ‘lost’ barn-find example. We always knew that there was an exceptional Porsche beneath all the dust, but this car has turned out to be even more remarkable than we first envisaged.
This poster-car 911 was first registered as F126 RBM on 2nd May 1989 and passed through five keepers (wearing MEJ 1 as it went) before being purchased by our 2025-vendor’s father in October 2002. We believe he bought it from Autofarm of Bicester, the revered Porsche specialists, as their liveried registration plates, showing PBZ 9111 and window stickers still adorned the car. Indeed, Autofarm's records confirm that our 2025-vendor’s father was their customer, but unfortunately, due to the timescales involved, their paper records were destroyed some years ago. However, MOT records from 2006 (showing a mileage then of 39,813 miles), up until December 2011, (showing a mileage then of 40,289 miles) indicate minimal usage, just 476 miles covered in five years! This is wholly in keeping with what we know about our 2025-vendor’s father, who was very much a car enthusiast, having owned all sorts of interesting cars from Jaguars to 2CVs, but also a very busy solicitor with little time to enjoy his Porsche. At some point in 2011, he drove the car into his barn adjoining his Northamptonshire house and there it has sat ever since. Kept warm and dry by a neighbouring room, this old building has done a very reasonable job of preserving this special car.
Its condition when it was put away must have been exceptional and very much in-keeping with a minimally used 40,000 mile 911, with original features and componentry still in place! Bodywork panels, paintwork, carpets, headlining and factory-finishes all appear to be original - a jack and toolkit complete the picture. The car is a feast of detail for any 911 enthusiast, preserved in a manner that they will really appreciate.
Sadly, our 2025-vendor’s father passed away in early 2025 and it fell to the family to find it a new home. In May 2025, at our SCF Sale, after some very spirited bidding, the car was bought by very meticulous Porshe-enthusiast buyers, a husband & wife, who’s exacting standards meant that it was taken straight to RPM Technik, one of the UK’s most respected Porsche specialists. Established in 2001 as a servicing, sales and restoration specialist, RPM has grown to a 30+ strong operation, filling a 20,000 sq. ft. purpose-built premises in Hertfordshire. As an engineering-focused company, they specialise in a diverse range of Porsche services, with their reputation for technical excellence in Porsche GT models being second to none, with arguably the most experienced technicians in the industry. In addition to servicing and maintenance, they have specialist departments that cover Projects and Restorations, Engine and Transmission rebuilds, Motorsport and Trackday preparation and an extensive Upgrades department.
Our now-vendor explains what condition the car was discovered to be in and what was done to it:
“So, after the Porsche specialists RPM Technik assessed the car, they said it looked very clean inside and out. The fuel tank was also unexpectedly clean with no sludge or residue, so the technicians thought that the tank had most likely been drained prior to long-term storage (i.e. the car was prepared). The tyres had 2001/2002 date stamps on them, so they may have been ones that were put on by Autofarm, and the car had done less than 500 miles between then and the Iconic Auctioneers SCF sale in May 2025 (verified by lack of tyre wear too). The old oil was changed but was clean and plentiful; the car was hand-cranked with new oil and a compression test performed which showed maximum 3% loss on all but one cylinder (the other cylinder had a 4% loss), which was in line with the low mileage and the well-kept condition of the car. The car then fired up first time, with good oil pressure straight away.
RPM performed an initial service, and an assessment. In discussion with their air-cooled head mechanic, we agreed an approach that would be sympathetic to the age of the car but also ensured it would be road worthy and keep as much of the original car as possible, using genuine Porsche or OEM parts. For example, the brake callipers were refurbished rather than replacing them. The full extent of the work is documented in a file with invoices, but included replacing the brakes, tyres, exhaust system, and rear suspension amongst other things. Note that the exhaust was replaced with a Dansk system but is as close to original as possible. Total costs spent on this car in the last 12 months, to get it to this condition, are just under £23,000. In keeping with how the car was kept by the previous owner, we have also never driven it in the rain or wintery/salty conditions. I think it's fair to say, that this car probably hasn't seen rain since ~2001 or so!
Although it was missing its service book/manuals (which the family couldn’t locate) when we bought it from Iconic, we have since sourced a model-correct manual for the car and we have a stamped-up service book too, following the two services at RPM.
Finally, the car passed its MOT last year and this year with no advisories and has just been serviced by RPM in July 2026 as well; we've done only a few hundred miles since then.”
Quite the debrief, backed-up by invoices, ratified and recommissioned by the best-in-the-business Porsche specialists – this is a very special car, have no doubt. Our husband and wife buyers have, regrettably, discovered that having sufficient time between busy professional and family lives, to fully enjoy an ‘80s Porsche, is hard to come by! They had planned for the car to be their modern-classic to keep and enjoy, having always coveted such a car, but now have made the tough decision to sell it – and back with Iconic Auctioneers, which is a real privilege. Guided sensibly, both in relation to the market for such a revered Porsche, especially one in such an enviable state, and compared to what was paid for it and invested into over the last 15 months. You will not be disappointed.
