When Ferrari unveiled the 328 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985, there was no great revolution. Nor did there need to be. Its predecessor, the 308, had spent ten years demonstrating rather convincingly what a mid-engined Ferrari ought to look like. So Pininfarina largely kept its hands off the basic shape, while Ferrari concentrated on the things that could actually be improved.

The 3.0-litre V8 grew to 3.2 litres courtesy of an additional 2 mm of bore and 2.6 mm of stroke. Hence the name: 3.2 litres, eight cylinders. With 270 hp, a five-speed gearbox and a kerb weight of just under 1.3 tonnes, it was capable of a little over 260 km/h. More importantly, the 328 was regarded as the thoroughly matured evolution of the 308: fast, agile and still largely free of the electronics that would later find their way into Maranello.

Visually, the sharper edges of the 308 were gently softened. Bumpers and front valance now blended more smoothly into one another without disturbing the characteristic wedge shape. The 328 was offered as the closed GTB Berlinetta and as the GTS with a removable roof panel. The latter found considerably more buyers – understandably so, since there were few more effective ways of enjoying a Ferrari V8 than under an open sky with the engine just inches behind your ears.

Around 7,400 examples of both versions were built before production ended in 1989. The technically far more modern 348 then took over. The 328 thus became the final chapter of an entire generation of Ferraris that has long since achieved design-icon status.

This 328 GTS inevitably draws attention. The reason is its decidedly unusual colour, FER306/C, known as ‘Prugna Metallizzato’. Literally translated, Prugna means plum – or Zwetschke, as an Austrian would say. Depending on the light, it can appear purple, slightly brownish or even dark red. It is reported that just five 328s were built in this spectacular colour, three GTS and two GTB, probably all combined with Crema leather.

This 328 GTS, chassis 77526, was delivered to Las Vegas through the Ferrari dealership in Salt Lake City in April 1989. Its original service book indicates that the Ferrari must already have been in Germany by 2003. In May of that year, a service including a timing-belt change was recorded at 30,278 miles. The same exercise was repeated only this February as part of a service at the authorised Ferrari workshop at Irschenberg. So the Ferrari does not merely look outrageously good; it also comes ready to demonstrate its qualities as a sports car.

The 328 GTS comes with German and Austrian papers, a fresh roadworthiness inspection and a fresh service. And as if that were not enough, its remarkable colour makes it very nearly unique. It really has to be seen. Words hardly do it justice.
