When Ferrari introduced the 348 in 1989, it also marked the symbolic beginning of a new era in Maranello. Known internally as the Tipo F119, the successor to the 328 was the first new production Ferrari launched after Enzo Ferrari’s death – and technically far more than another evolutionary step.

Its name already revealed the essentials: 3.4 litres, eight cylinders. Familiar from the Mondial t, the V8 produced 300 bhp, later 295 with catalytic converters. It was now mounted longitudinally ahead of the rear axle, with the five-speed gearbox arranged transversely behind it. Ferrari also broke with its predecessor when it came to the chassis. In place of the traditional tubular frame came a new construction with a unitary body, creating more room inside but also bringing a fair amount of extra weight with it.

Visually, the 348 clearly looked towards its big brother, the Testarossa. Strakes ran along the flanks and across the rear, while the body became broader and more angular. The man responsible was Leonardo Fioravanti – after the Daytona, Berlinetta Boxer, 288 GTO and F40, one of the defining Ferrari designers of the Pininfarina era.

Initially, the 348 was available as the closed tb and the ts with a removable roof panel. In 1993 came the Spider, along with the revised GTB and GTS, offering more power and an improved chassis. Its successor, the F355, was already waiting in the wings by 1994, although the open 348 remained in production a little longer.

For years, the 348 had a difficult time of it. The 328 was considered more charming, the F355 more accomplished. Today, its appeal lies precisely between the two: no power steering, no electronic driving aids, no paddles and little interest in relieving its driver of any effort. The 348 demands strength, revs and attention – every inch the Ferrari it ought to be.

This 348 tb in Rosso Corsa (FER 300/9) with black leather, chassis 88526, was delivered to the Brussels Ferrari dealership Garage Francorchamps in February 1991. The original service book records a “Monsieur Gregoire” as its first owner. This was presumably Jean-Pierre Gregoire, then Directeur Général of Garage Francorchamps. That would also explain why the Ferrari was not first registered until August 1995. Gregoire presumably had unrestricted access to trade plates.

A service carried out in Luxembourg in the autumn of 1994 at 10,186 kilometres suggests that the car had already changed hands by then. At the local Ferrari dealership, Garage Winandy Frères, the 348 tb received its second service in 1997 at 16,872 kilometres. For the next two scheduled services it returned to Belgium, this time to official Ferrari partner F.M.A. nv in Wijnegem.

Around ten years ago, its current owner brought the Ferrari from Belgium to Austria. From then on, it was entrusted to Horst Pichler, the official service partner in Wels: in 2018, immediately before its Austrian individual approval, at 52,277 kilometres, and again this May at 52,533 kilometres. On both occasions, the timing belt was renewed and all fluids and filters were changed.

As complete as its service history is, so well cared for does this 348 tb appear today. No sticky switches, no worn leather, no visible scars to the exterior, but fresh from a service. Exactly how you would want a Ferrari, if you had the choice. With this one, you do.
