Recently mechanically overhauled

A pickup was built to work. Strictly speaking, there was no need for Chevrolet to give its new workhorse a panoramic windscreen, broad shoulders and rather a lot of chrome in 1955. It certainly did no harm, though.

With the new Task Force series, Chevrolet said goodbye to the rounded Advance-Design pickups and brought its trucks visually into the 1950s. The 3100, as the half-ton pickup, remained the backbone of the range. Beneath the more modern bodywork, things remained reassuringly down-to-earth: a ladder frame, a driven solid rear axle and engineering designed above all to do one thing – work.

The real news was under the bonnet. In 1955, Chevrolet’s new 265-cubic-inch small-block V8 became available in a pickup for the first time. Two things had come together that would prove remarkably well suited to one another: Chevrolet trucks and V8 engines. A match for life, you might say.

Back then, this was of interest mainly to farmers, tradesmen and small businesses. They did not need a lifestyle truck, they needed a tool. Today, the early Task Force models in particular have become sought-after American pickups. Not all of them remain entirely as they left the factory. Larger V8s, automatic transmissions and subtle upgrades have become almost as much a part of American pickup culture as the load bed itself.

This 3100, too, has moved some way from its original specification. It came from Germany to Austria in 2009 and received individual type approval here. Its officially registered Chevrolet V8 is paired with an automatic transmission, turning the former utility vehicle into a remarkably relaxed classic to drive.

The Chevrolet never quite became a pensioner, though. Its consignor used it as a promotional and working vehicle for his roofing company, remaining surprisingly faithful to its original purpose. The distinctive canvas canopy was part of the look and can be removed completely when required.

As recently as August 2026, the 3100 underwent further mechanical work, received a new set of tyres and passed a fresh inspection.
