Lincoln Continental Town Car | 1979

Highlights:

– 6.6-litre V8 engine, petrol, automatic transmission

– Concours d’Élégance class winner in 2004

– Presented in its original sedan/limousine body style

– Final model year of the full-size, uncompromised Continental Town Car before the 1980 downsizing

The seller offers for sale this 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car, powered by a 6.6-litre V8 engine, paired with an automatic transmission. This example is presented in the sedan/limousine configuration that defined the model in its final full-size form, and its history includes a class win at a concours d’élégance in 2004, a detail that speaks to the way this car has been presented and cared for over the years. Further photographs of this car will follow.

The Town Car name has a long history within the Lincoln range, first appearing as a special trim designation on the Lincoln Continental sedan in the late 1950s and returning through much of the 1970s as the flagship version of the model. It would only become a standalone nameplate from 1981 onward, so this 1979 example represents the last generation of the type, a Continental fitted with the Town Car package rather than the later, smaller Panther-platform Town Car. 1979 was in fact the final year of Lincoln’s truly full-size Continental, before the model was significantly downsized for 1980, making this car one of the last of a distinctly American breed of enormous, unapologetic luxury sedans.

Underneath its long, formal bodywork sits a substantial 6.6-litre V8, paired with a smooth-shifting automatic transmission, delivering the kind of relaxed, effortless cruising this generation of Continental was built for. The design language of the era, an upright grille, crisp formal roofline and generous chrome detailing, is unmistakably Lincoln, and remains one of the most recognisable American luxury car silhouettes of the 1970s. For collectors of full-size American luxury cars, this Continental Town Car offers a rare chance to own one of the last examples of this scale and character before Lincoln moved to a smaller platform.
