It's the first Mini with the "S": introduced in April 1963, it was designed for sporty customers who wanted something more than the "normal" Cooper.

The 1071 Austin Mini Cooper S we are offering was built on April 10, 1964, for the home market. It was a right-hand drive car, finished in Tartan Red with a black roof and "red-and-gold" interior. The car was delivered to its first owner a few days later.

Reading some written testimonials from previous owners, along with some historic photos, we can report that the car made its debut at the Gaisberg hillclimb in Austria in 1964, and was subsequently driven by English driver John Terry of the English Turtle Team, in a left-hand drive configuration, participating in other competitions. It appears the car was then used by German and Austrian drivers in subsequent years, before being registered in France on June 13, 1977.

From what we know, the car was always used for competition and arrived in Italy about 20 years ago, racing with Andrea Belli, who won the TC1150 class in the 2006 Italian Historic Car Hill Climb Championship. There are some videos of this car, during these races, enclosed, one of them.

In the hands of its current owner since 2014, the car underwent a restoration involving the engine (approximately 98-100 hp), gearbox, and suspension by the tuner Conti, famous in the Mini world. It raced again in 2016 and 2017 in some rounds of the Italian Historic Hillclimbs Championship, winning its class on each occasion.

At the end of 2017, the car was converted for road use, while retaining the roll cage attachments and installing SU H2 carburetors instead of the more extreme H4s. The sports exhaust, limited-slip differential, and the elevated gear lever, a common modification of the era, have been retained.

The interior has been refitted with a pair of original period Microcell seats, as well as an additional dashboard with a rare original Speedwell tachometer and an original Spice sports steering wheel.

In place of the original rims, four rare Rosepetal wheels, typical of Cooper S models of the era, have been fitted.

The car has Italian registration plates and registration certificates, ASI CRS, British Heritage, and FIA HTP (expires 12-2025), CSAI technical passport, and old French registration certificate; it can be inspected by appointment in Bologna.

NOTE: the Cooper S 1071 had the single fuel tank as standard equipment. The second tank was purchased mainly on those cars that used to race on track.

Vettura con targa e libretto Italiani, CRS ASI, British Heritage e HTP FIA (scadenza 12-2025), passaporto tecnico CSAI e vecchio libretto francese; visibile previo appuntamento a Bologna.
