Morris Mini Super de Luxe 850 October 1967

Summary: all original panels, no rust, some modifications, wet suspension, 998 A+, very good condition.

Details: do not look at this if you want an unmodified Mini, I built this to be better in every respect compared to how it left the factory (I am a retired engineer). This is a unique Mini. I bought it in 1999 from a lady in Worthing, she purchased it in 1984, one owner prior. It has now done 50K genuine miles.

Bodywork: All panels are original except for a small piece of drivers footwell and small area of adjacent wheelarch (welding done by me 25 years ago and still in perfect condition), I also renewed the rear subframe. Let me be clear, the body has had no other restoration: there are a few shallow depressions and some touching-in of small areas and, about 8 years ago, I gave it a very light ‘blow over’ with 2 pack but I did not attempt to hide any of the ‘patina’ described above. What you see is what you get, unlike most other ‘recently restored’ Minis hiding all sorts of horrors. Underside and wheelarches are protected protected with Dinitrol. All cavities are regularly injected with Dinitrol, including between the A panels, a place often ignored. Stainless bumpers. This body is better than new.

Interior: All original paintwork inside, all original interior including carpets.

Seats currently fitted are full leather from Riley Elf with reclining fronts in porcelain green (excellent original vinyl seats in same colour are included). Headlining has a few small areas of discolouration. Seat belts fitted (front inertia, rear lap). Moto-Lita steering wheel. All rubber window and door seals replaced. Soundproofing under carpets (high quality vinyl/ foam sandwich type).

Electrics: Third brake light fitted to parcel shelf (uncut shelf included). Fuses & relays located under front parcel shelf, easily accessible. Electric fuel pump with override switch. Radiator fan (Kenlowe). It has Mk 2 stalk switch and wipers. The electrics have been completely rewired to modern standards, including fused protection to all circuits, with extra earths to lamps, all fully documented, and far safer than original.

Suspension/ brakes: Cooper S running gear: displacers, front discs, larger rear drums, & wheels. (all original parts included). Excellant tyres. Stainless caliper pistons, stainless braided hoses, adjustable tie-rods and camber brackets. All cupro-nickel hydro pipes and fuel and brake pipes. All taper-roller wheel bearings. Of course, I am not certain that they are Cooper S displacers (they were used when purchased 25 years ago) but the ride is very controlled with no pitching and bouncing which standard wet cars tended to display. I have not needed to pump-up the suspension in 25 years.

Engine : is A+ 998 bored +20, crank wedged, tuftrided, full balance, all by MED.

Cylinder head: hardened seats, manganese bronze guides, Rimflo valves, standard cam, chambers equalised, standard valve gear, all renewed. All by Keith Calver, and built by me.

Ancillaries: HIF38 carb (with fuel regulator) on Torquemaster alloy heated manifold, temperature-controlled Metro airbox. Metro 1300 cast iron exhaust manifold (inlet sawn-off) Metro downpipe into stainless RC50 exhaust. Aldon custom distributor with Ignitor ignition and Flamethrower coil.

Mini Spares Supercool 2 core radiator. By-pass deleted (water passes through manifold and heater instead). Magnom magnetic oil filter attachment. As is usual for any A series engine with more than a few hundred miles on it, there are a few small oil leaks (rocker cover, rod-change shaft).

This engine sounds turbine-like, it’s so well balanced, and the oil stays totally clean. Performance is quite spritely, altogether far better than the original.

Gearbox: fully rebuilt by me with 4 synchro A+ gears, bushed planet gears, hardened cross pin, rod change, 3. 2 FD. Verto clutch with hydraulic operation. I also have a remote-change casing and extension, if you wanted to go down that route.

All-in -all the car drives very well with no issues to sort out, unless you are a perfectionist, in which case you won’t be interested in this.

All inspections welcome. And all original parts are included, if you want them (850 engine and box, all running gear, seats, grille, bumpers, steering wheel etc etc).
