1967 Citroen DS Second Generation 21

1967 DS21 Cabriolet, an original and unique Citroën bearing the hallmarks of Henri Chapron. This well documented vehicle, which I have owned since June, 1979, has many original features; chassis, bodywork, exterior trim, natural leather interior, carpets, sun visors and trunk lining are just as they left Chapron. The top was replaced, with Hartz Stayfast, but the original top pads and tonneau cover are from Chapron. The exterior was repainted with Imron Black Gold, before my purchase. The paint is presentable but dated. The original color was AC110, Sable Noir, the dashboard, door jambs and gravel shield retain this color. My intention has been to preserve this Cabriolet as close to original as possible.

The hydraulic system was converted to LHM (Hydraulic Mineral Fluid), in 2019, using rebuilt parts from a European Model LHM based parts car. The engine was rebuilt in 1995 with NOS parts. Carburetor was re-manufactured in 2024. The wheels are powder-coated. The exhaust system is stainless. The Michelin 180/ 15 XAS tires look good but are dated 2012. The Cabriolet received a tune up and mechanical evaluation in June 2026. Work included: Tune-Up, oil change, motor mounts, rear suspension stops, recharged spheres, parking brake adjustment, fan belts, valves adjusted, clutch adjusted, etc.

The Citroën DS21 Cabriolet is a front wheel drive automobile, developing 109 HP at 5, 500 rpm. The BVH model has a hydraulic gearbox, while there is a clutch, there is no clutch pedal, the clutch engages hydraulically as you shift the wand like lever on the dash. The suspension, the brakes, and the power steering are also controlled hydraulically. The headlights are QI and the main headlights are self leveling. A Pertronics ignition system is installed. North American models have the turn signals paired with the Lucas taillights. The Cabriolet has a Delco Remy alternator, that was a modification by Citroen Montreal, in place of the original generator. An oil pressure gauge has been added. I removed the sound insulation from the interior floors and cleaned and prepped the floor for paint, I added two layers of EZ Cool insulation to the floors and side rails. The trunk floor received the same treatment. The frame rails have been treated with Fluid Film, a lanolin-based, solvent-free lubricant and rust preventative. This Cabriolet is a solid rust free example.

The original Citroen screw jack is included and is needed to change a rear tire, while the front tires can be changed with the systems hydraulics, the rear tires need to be jacked higher due to being enclosed by the rear bodywork. A Blaupunkt Manhattan radio is installed with ADS enclosed soeakers below the dash. The original Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio and speaker are included in the sale. Current odometer reading is 90026.

Please be aware that there are very few, perhaps a handful, of well documented authentic Citroen DS21 Cabriolets with this provenance. 1967 is considered the sweet spot in DS21 Cabriolet lineage as it was the last year that combined the original front end of Flamino Bertoni and the graceful body by Henri Chapron. There were 91 DS21 Cabriolets produced for the 1967 model year.

Henri Chapron Cabriolet de Série

A model "Décapotable" was offered from Fall 1960 until Summer 1971. The Cabriolet, model was initially listed as "Décapotable" in Citroën brochures and were built by French Carrosier, Henri Chapron, for the Citroën dealer network, 1, 365 units were sold. These DS convertibles used a special reinforced frame. Henri Chapron had originally built a Convertible DS19 for the October 1958 Paris auto show . At the auto-show, Citroën was so impressed by the Henri Chapron Cabriolet design that they approached him asking him if he would agree to build a Citroën "Décapotable" (Convertible) which would be marketed and commercialized through their dealerships. Chapron and Citroën teams worked, hand in hand, on the project. Regular meetings, referenced in memos kept in the Chapron archives, took place both at Henri Chapron and at the Citroën headquarters. After two years of hard work, the first cabriolet DS19 “de Série”/ "Décapotable", ordered and commercialized by Citroën, was built, Fall of 1960, at the Henri Chapron factory, 114-116, rue Aristide Briand, Levallois-Perret. Citroën and Chapron had an agreement: Citroën would order the “Cabriolets de Série” (4-seated) to Henri Chapron who had them built in his annex, 107-109, rue Aristide Briand, Levallois-Perret. The production run of 1365 Cabriolet de Série, over the ten year period, were sold through the Citroën dealer network.
