After the launch of the 300 SL, an American Mercedes importer found that, despite strong interest, the 300 SL remained too expensive for the average consumer looking for a weekend car. Following exchanges with the headquarters in Germany, measures were quickly implemented: in the same year, the 190 SL (based on the Pontoon) was unveiled at the New York Motor Show. A year later, the production version was ready and presented in Geneva. Remarkable fact, the car wasn’t positioned as a sports car, but as a comfortable two‑seat coupé. This positioning proved to be a huge success, with more than 25, 000 units produced in Germany between 1955 and 1963.

Our 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL has been fully restored by its previous owner in the Netherlands.
