HISTORY

The Triumph TR4: a proper popular roadster—light, agile, and a pleasure to drive. All of that, combined with a stunning Italian design. An Italian design on an English car—what? Quite right: the design was created by Michelotti, who produced legendary designs for various coachbuilders and brands such as Ferrari and Maserati. The car was built in 1966 and delivered new to the United States, where the climate is favourable. The last American owner had the Triumph in Monterey, California. In 1994, the car was imported to the Netherlands, where it has always remained with the same owner. The car is supplied with many documents, including export papers, an original “Owners Handbook”, the latest APK form from 2021 (after which an APK was no longer required due to the car’s age). In addition, a thick stack of beautiful books is included, including a parts catalogue and a workshop manual.

EXTERIOR

A real treat for the eyes, especially the example we’re offering in a superb colour combination: British Racing Green (colour code 75) with a beige leather interior. The paintwork was refreshed in the 1990s. Naturally, the car shows a few signs of age, but the body has never been welded and it’s in very good condition with no damage. The chrome and headlights are in good condition. The rubber seals show signs of wear. The black hood is in good shape with no tears. For a precise impression, please consult our complete photo report, which includes photos underneath the car.

INTERIOR

The interior is still in good condition, with only a few minor signs of wear. The beige leather is free of tears. The large steering wheel, set almost vertical, and the handsome large dials make for a pleasant cockpit. The dashboard is beautifully finished with wood. The seats are adjustable. The interior is also equipped with optional heating. The boot is clean too, and it can accommodate the spare wheel, a key, and a jack.

TECHNICAL

The engine and gearbox have been overhauled after only 2, 852 miles (4, 590 km). The underside is very solid and has stood up excellently to time. Adjustable telescopic “Spax” shock absorbers are fitted at the rear. “KONI Classic” shock absorbers are fitted at the front. New rubber seals have also been installed. The car starts, shifts, brakes, and drives very well, and is therefore ready for its next owner.

GENERAL

The TR4 is a sports car produced from 1961 to 1965, succeeding the TR3. Under the bonnet, the first series of the TR4 is largely the same as the TR4, but thanks to a longer wheelbase it offers more space. Unlike the TR3, its larger doors can accommodate side windows that pivot down. The TR4 differs most from the TR3 in its looks: a bold, robust grille and clean, streamlined lines. It’s characterised by a bulge on the bonnet, which houses the twin carburettors. The TR4 was designed by the Italian designer Michelotti, whose input ensured a beautiful design—many consider it the finest of the entire Triumph TR series. Because of the emphasis on the American market, relatively few examples were sold in Europe. The 4-cylinder engine has a displacement of 2, 138 cc. Thanks to its sporting driving characteristics, several TR4s were used at the time by the English police. In 1965, the TR4 was replaced by the TR4 A IRS, with the letters IRS standing for Independent Rear Suspension (independent rear suspension). This independent rear suspension offers more driving comfort and better driving characteristics, making it a highly desirable model today. What’s more, the restrained metal dashboard of the TR4 was fitted with a veneered wooden panel, and the handbrake lever was moved to the transmission tunnel between the seats. As the TR4 A IRS was only produced until 1967, the number of units produced—28, 468—can be considered relatively low. Precise steering, excellent road holding thanks to a well-balanced chassis, plus a sportsy, supple ride—these are what make the TR4 a highly sought-after sports tourer.
