1965 Wolseley 6/ 110 Automatic with Power Steering
Some motor cars capture their era quite beautifully, and this wonderful Wolseley 6/ 110 is certainly one of them. Substantial, dignified and wonderfully luxurious, it comes from a time when polished wood, sumptuous leather and a silky 2900cc smooth six-cylinder engine were all considered essential ingredients in a fine British motor car.
This stunning 1965 example is a particularly impressive survivor. Finished in a handsome two-tone green, it presents beautifully, with outstanding paintwork that suits the elegant and imposing lines of the 6/ 110 perfectly. From its distinctive illuminated Wolseley grille badge to its generous proportions and wonderfully traditional cabin, this is a car with a real sense of occasion.
Open one of those substantial doors and the appeal continues. The luxurious leather interior is a delightful place to be, surrounded by beautiful woodwork, traditional instrumentation and the lovely period details that gave a Wolseley its unmistakable character. Comfortable, beautifully appointed and full of charm, it offers the sort of atmosphere that makes even the simplest journey feel rather special.
The 6/ 110 was one of the last of the great Wolseley saloons and represented a development of the earlier 6/ 99. Introduced in 1961, it formed part of BMC's prestigious family of large six-cylinder motor cars, sharing its basic architecture with the Austin Westminster and Vanden Plas Princess 3-Litre. Its handsome styling carried the influence of Pininfarina, while beneath the bonnet sat BMC's wonderfully smooth 2. 9-litre C-Series straight-six.
These were serious motor cars when new. The Wolseley appealed to the professional gentleman and discerning family motorist who wanted something a little more distinguished than the ordinary family saloon, without sacrificing comfort or effortless long-distance ability. More than sixty years later, those qualities remain very much part of the 6/ 110 experience.
Originally registered in Nottinghamshire on 2nd June 1965, this example has covered some 75, 000 miles and enjoys a particularly desirable specification. Automatic transmission is joined by the optional power assisted steering, a combination that suits the character of the big Wolseley perfectly and allows it to be enjoyed in the relaxed, unhurried manner for which it was intended.
What makes this particular car especially interesting is the history that accompanies it. Rather than appearing after decades with little known of its past, this Wolseley comes with a substantial history file stretching right back to the 1960s. The paperwork records continual care and expenditure over the years, including an invoice for more than £3, 000 relating to a major refurbishment carried out in 2011.
Its wonderful original-style buff logbook remains with the car, providing a tangible link to its early life in Nottinghamshire. This is accompanied by numerous invoices, photographs and the current V5C registration certificate, together forming the sort of history file that is becoming increasingly difficult to find with a motor car of this age.
Today, the Wolseley remains a stunning and beautifully preserved survivor. The outstanding two-tone paintwork gives it tremendous presence, while the luxurious leather interior retains all the charm and grandeur expected of one of BMC's finest large saloons. Climbing aboard feels less like simply getting into an old car and more like stepping back into a wonderfully civilised period of British motoring.
Large Wolseleys of this quality are becoming increasingly scarce, particularly examples combining automatic transmission, power assisted steering, beautiful presentation and such an extensive history. Whether destined for shows, weekends away, club events or simply the pleasure of taking the long way home, this is the sort of classic that can make every journey feel like an occasion.
Although MOT exempt due to its age, this beautiful Wolseley will be supplied with a fresh 12 months MOT for added peace of mind.
