In 1947, businessman David Brown—already the owner of Aston Martin—acquired Lagonda, and in doing so secured the well-born 2. 6-litre 6-cylinder twin-overhead-cam engine designed by Willie Watson… at the request of the brilliant Walter Owen Bentley, in order to equip his future sports car. Revealed in April 1950, the DB2 owed much to the “DB1” (in fact called the 2-Litre Sport), the modified and shortened chassis of which drew heavily from it. In terms of bodywork, it was hard not to be captivated by this timeless elegance and its very Italian inspiration. In 1952, John Bolster from Autosport praised the DB2’s exceptional performance, highlighting the car’s safety and versatility: “Whether it’s for shopping, to go to the theatre, for long journeys or even to race at Le Mans, it will be difficult to find a more perfect car than the Aston Martin.” In late 1950, the factory unveiled an equally elegant Cabriolet version, and when production ended in April 1953, a total of 411 DB2s had been built, including 98 cabriolets. The superb cabriolet shown in these pages left the factory in July 1953, finished in a combination of Steel Dust paint, Connolly red leather and a grey hood… It also had the unique feature of being LHD (Left-Hand Drive) because it was destined for the French market. Its first owner, based in Paris at Boulevard de Courcelles, was Guy Schoelier. We find it again in the 1990s in Savoie, before it was acquired by American singer David McNeil, son of the great painter Marc Chagall. It was he who entrusted the complete maintenance of this Aston Martin to British Motors, Aston Martin’s dealership in Monaco, where he was living at the time. In 2008, the engine was fully rebuilt, including the manufacture of a new cylinder head in England, followed by the brakes, and all used engine components, as well as the clutch. In 2014, it was sold at auction and entered the personal collection of Alain Aziza, CEO of Auto Performance, the official brand importer for France. After his death in 2021, it was sold to the current owner, a French connoisseur of Newport Pagnell’s productions. This DB2 is one of just 75 left-hand-drive cabriolets ever made, and furthermore it is originally French. It has benefited from careful servicing at major franchised dealerships of the marque, in Monaco and in France, and from the passion of its various owners—all enthusiasts, even brand representatives. It represents a rare opportunity to acquire an extremely rare model with one of the most elegant colour combinations: black bodywork / red leather interior.
