Beschrijving

We are delighted to offer this exceptional, show-standard MGA 1600 Coupe to the market.

NSJ 735 has had just two owners since undergoing a comprehensive, body-off, nut-and-bolt restoration by renowned MGA marque specialist Bob West between 1993 and 1998. Since its rebuild, the car has covered fewer than 9, 000 miles. On its very first outing, it was awarded ‘Car of the Show’ at the Footman James Classic Car Show at Manchester G-MEX, and it has since regularly participated in the prestigious Cheshire Concours d’Esprit.

Originally built at the Abingdon factory in 1959 to North American specification, the MGA was repatriated to the UK in the early 1990s in need of a complete restoration. The subsequent rebuild was carried out under the watchful eye of Bob West’s chief mechanic, James Horner, and undertaken to an exceptionally high standard, with an extensive photographic record documenting the work.

The restoration was comprehensive from the ground up. The body was removed and completely rebuilt, while the chassis was fully restored and the mechanical and electrical systems comprehensively renewed. Finished in beautifully presented Dark Blue, the car received renewed brightwork, new wheels and tyres, and a complete retrim. The seats were specially modelled on those fitted to the Le Mans MGA SRX 210, while the cockpit is further enhanced by an original Halda Speedpilot and Hanhart stopwatches.

The MGA is accompanied by an impressive and comprehensive history file, including restoration photographs, invoices, MOT certificates and a workshop manual. Importantly, this is not simply an older restoration that has survived well; the quality and extent of the original work remain immediately apparent. More than 25 years after its rebuild, NSJ 735 still presents with the appearance and quality of a far more recent restoration.

It is, quite simply, a magnificent example, both aesthetically and mechanically, and is equally impressive on the road. The car is ready to be enjoyed immediately by its next custodian.

In preparation for sale, the MGA underwent a £3, 050. 25 full service and inspection by Malton Coachworks in April 2026. The work carried out included:

Full service and inspection

New spark plugs

New wiper blades

New jack and hammer

New spare wheel clamp

New input shaft seal

New rear hubs

New rear brake shoes and cylinders

Fresh oil in the rear axle

New coolant pump and thermostat housing

New valve cover gasket

New sump gasket

New prop shaft nuts and bolts

New horn

Coolant system flushed and refilled with fresh antifreeze

New battery clamp

New front discs and pads

New nearside front track rod end and gaiter

Carburettors stripped down and reset

NSJ 735 represents a rare opportunity to acquire an MGA 1600 Coupe that combines an outstanding, documented restoration with genuine show-winning credentials and the benefit of having been comprehensively recommissioned for continued enjoyment. A truly special example of one of MG’s most charismatic and desirable models.

At The Forge Prees, we specialise in classic, vintage and enthusiast vehicles. Every vehicle we offer is unique, with its own history, character and, inevitably, its own imperfections. Unlike modern vehicles, classic cars require a different approach to ownership, maintenance and care, as well as an appreciation of their individual quirks.

We pride ourselves on providing honest, detailed descriptions of every vehicle, supported by extensive photography and video. Our aim is to give prospective purchasers as much information as possible, allowing you to make a considered and informed decision before buying.

We strongly encourage all prospective purchasers to carry out their own inspections and research, and to ensure they are fully satisfied with the vehicle’s condition, history and ongoing requirements before committing to purchase. Absolutely any inspection is welcome, and we are happy to facilitate independent inspections by prior arrangement.

Before purchasing a vehicle from The Forge, please take the time to read our Terms of Sale, which are available on our website. Alternatively, please contact us directly and we will be happy to provide a copy.
