Beschrijving

We are delighted to offer this beautifully presented 1959 Triumph TR3A, an original UK right-hand-drive example finished in Triumph White with contrasting red leather upholstery, red hood, full tonneau and side screens.

First registered on 15th May 1959, this TR3A has enjoyed a long history of careful ownership. It remained with its first owner for 19 years and is now offered from its seventh owner. A previous owner was an active member of the TR Register, enjoying the car at local shows and club events following its restoration.

What makes this TR3A particularly appealing is the thoughtful selection of upgrades carried out over the years. Most notably, the car has been fitted with a Mazda MX-5 five-speed manual gearbox with short-throw shift, transforming the driving experience while retaining the character and spirit of the original Triumph. The additional ratio makes the car considerably more relaxed at modern road speeds and particularly well suited to longer journeys, touring and continental travel.

Further mechanical improvements include the conversion to splined wire wheel hubs, complete with new hubs and bearings, together with wire wheels and knock-on spinners. The rear axle has also been rebuilt and new rear brake drums fitted. In 2021, the front suspension was inspected and new wishbone bushes installed as preventative maintenance.

The TR3A was an important development of the TR sports car, introducing a number of practical improvements over the earlier TR3, including the wider front grille, exterior door handles, lockable boot handle and a full tool kit as standard. With total production of approximately 58, 000 examples, the TR3A proved enormously successful, although surviving cars are now considerably fewer.

This particular example presents exceptionally well. The bodywork is remarkably solid, with no obvious signs of corrosion, while the paintwork retains an excellent depth and lustre. The red leather interior and trim are in equally impressive condition, recently complemented by the installation of a fresh set of red carpets, perfectly matching the car’s livery. The chrome work is also excellent throughout.

Door shuts and panel gaps are notably good, and the underside presents to the same high standard as the upper bodywork, completing what is a particularly well-preserved and highly presentable example.

The beautifully detailed engine bay reflects the care lavished on the car. The engine starts readily, displays strong oil pressure and pulls strongly throughout the rev range, accompanied by the distinctive and enjoyable exhaust note for which these cars are renowned.

The result is a TR3A that successfully combines period charm with genuine usability. The Mazda five-speed conversion and recent mechanical work make this a classic that can be driven and enjoyed rather than simply admired, whether that means attending a local show, embarking on a long-distance tour or simply enjoying a spirited drive on a sunny afternoon.

A superb example of the iconic TR3A, this is a car that is ready to be enjoyed and one that any enthusiast would be proud to own. Equally at home on a show field, on a touring holiday or within a collection, it represents a particularly appealing opportunity to acquire a well-sorted and thoughtfully upgraded British sports car.

We strongly encourage all prospective purchasers to carry out their own inspections and research, and to ensure they are fully satisfied with the vehicle’s condition, history and ongoing requirements before committing to purchase. Absolutely any inspection is welcome, and we are happy to facilitate independent inspections by prior arrangement.
