MG K3 SUPERCHARGED MAGNETTE. ( FOR SALE)
BACKGROUND
In 1934 car builders Thomson and Taylor of Brooklands built the most coveted K3 race car ever. It was raced regularly by Witney Straight and Richard Seaman in pre war years eventually ending up in the USA. The car still survives today.
The car you see here is an evocation of the original design substantially improved for the modern age incorporating sensible features to improve reliability and the driving experience for the numerous vintage rally events that are now organized by companies such as Hero/ ERA, Scenic tours, Mille, hill climbs, timed trials, sprints.
CHASSIS/ BODY
The body was designed, improved and constructed by master coach builder Brian Martin of Vintage Coachworks (South Stoke). The original design was scaled and constructed onto a restored 1947 MG TC chassis. A tubular alloy frame designed and skinned in the finest English 16 aluminium to provide immense strength/ rigidity/ lightness all rivets are of aircraft grade. The floors are also of thick sheet alloy. In addition, numerous improvements were incorporated. A single drivers door was carefully installed enabling taller and more senior drivers to enter and leave the car in a more dignified manner. To enable relaxed touring, a massive 17-gallon alloy fuel tank and reserve has been installed in the tail enabling a drive from Calais to the South of France or Spain without stopping or delay. The MG was sprayed in Cameron Green to compliment the red interior.
INTERIOR
The interior of the MG has been doubled skinned in Alloy sheet for further strength. For comfort, the entire area is trimmed in red leather along with the handmade seats 3 leather hides were used to create a warm ambience in the cockpit. Additionally, there is a secure luggage compartment behind the seats sufficiently large enough to house a suitcase, soft bags, coats etc. Lap seat belts are also installed tall drivers are provided with ample leg room. The MG steering wheel is the rare 3 bladed sprung wheel favored by discerning drivers of the 1930s. The green MG chronomatic instruments were fully rebuilt. USB sockets were incorporated along with cockpit lighting to aid map reading. A 3 section tonneau cover protects the cockpit and the driver when driving solo in inclement weather.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The engine is a fully rebuilt MG XPAG unit. Balanced and lightened with a steel crankshaft (96mm stroke) with racing rods, JE Pistons and gas flowed cylinder head creating a capacity of 1466cc. Supercharged with a Eaton 62 blower at a gentle boost of 5lb this immensely robust engine produced an easy 100bhp at 5000rpm and could easily produce much more if required. The camshaft and gas flowed cylinder head is designed specifically for a blown engine by leading MG engineer George Edney. The engine is full of torque and is lazy to drive, in touring mode returning 35+mpg or rapid progress in frenetic mode whatever is your desire! An engine time clock is installed recording the number of hours run.
The 5 speed gearbox is a fully rebuilt Ford type 9 unit with heavy duty bearings fitted with a long first gear for Sprint starts and capable of coping with up to 250bhp if required. The rear axle was completely rebuilt to ensure utter reliability. The axle ratio was changed and a new steel differential unit was installed complete with new tapered halfshafts and hubs capable of absorbing immense power without fuss.
The 5 wire wheels are new and fitted with 60 spokes instead of 48 again for strength and reliability, the rear pair are offset to improve handling. The braking system was substantially improved with a twin leading shoe conversion on the front axle all pipework is copper, silicon fluid is used throughout and ensures seal reliability for years.
