1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal

Not all projects originate from a major manufacturer. Some are the result of experience, passion, and hundreds of hours of work. Such is the case with this spectacular Alfa Romeo 8C Barqueta, a sports car inspired by the racing barquetas of the late 1950s, handcrafted by Giorgio Giorda and engineer Enrique Scalabroni.

Although its appearance is reminiscent of the endurance prototypes of the era, it is not a replica. The starting point was the mechanical components of an Alfa Romeo Montreal, from which it retains its characteristic 2. 6-liter V8 engine with around 200 hp. However, the rest of the assembly was extensively revised to achieve a much sportier performance.

The car employs a tubular steel chassis designed specifically for the project, with a modular structure capable of providing high torsional rigidity and improving safety in the event of a collision. A completely hand-molded aluminum body was mounted on top, which allowed the weight to be kept to around 920 kg in running order, a very low figure for a vehicle with a V8 engine.

The suspension, based on that of the Montreal but optimized with new dampers and specific geometry, along with an oversized braking system and careful weight distribution, makes this sports car as effective as it is exciting to drive. Every air intake, every panel, and every detail was designed with a functional as well as an aesthetic purpose.

The result is much more than a design exercise. It is proof that classic engineering, craftsmanship, and a passion for automobiles can bring a unique vehicle to life. A project that pays homage to Alfa Romeo's history without sacrificing modern technical solutions, and that perfectly embodies the spirit of those racing sports cars that defined an era.
