Just twelve months later, the production version made its debut in Geneva. Interestingly, Mercedes never intended the 190 SL to be a pure sports car, but rather a refined two-seater grand tourer. The formula proved a resounding success, with more than 25,000 examples produced between 1955 and 1963.

Our 190 SL has enjoyed a fascinating and beautifully documented life. First registered in the USA in 1962, it remained with its original owner for many years. From 1975 through to 2008, every annual Virginia Police inspection and service invoice was carefully retained — a truly rare level of provenance.
